So you’re in the mood for lgbt books with the found family trope

Found family is one of my favourite tropes and I’m definitely not alone in that. I mean, I actually know for sure because I was running a poll on twitter to figure out what my theme should be today – and most of y’all voted for found families.

And so here we are. But of course I had to make it harder for myself and decided to only rec books with gay characters. Which, depending how you look at it, might have been my best idea yet. I was pretty close to just reccing Les Mis otherwise and being done with it…

Let’s dive in!

The Weight of the Stars by K. Ancrum
(buy it on BookDepo)

Found family is basically one of Ancrum’s signature tropes, so of course! I went with her upcoming book first. Ryann Bird – our butch lesbian mc – “adopts” all the misfits at her school. That’s actually half the premise for the story… Anyway, the teens here are the most beautiful group of kids I have ever known and I love them all dearly & would fight anyone for them. Also, we have two lesbians, a bi guy and a gay guy. And a little baby. :>>

Joyride, Vol. 1 by Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly (writers)
(buy it on BookDepo)

Yes, I have a review of it. Yes, I mentioned it in two different (a & b) Tuesday Mood posts. What can I say! I really loved this series, okay. A bunch of teens and other entities come together to not only form a family, but save the world in the meantime! And two of them (girls) are gay and in love!

Froi of the Exiles (Lumatere Chronicles #2) by Melina Marchetta
(buy it on BookDepo)

Please don’t let the cover throw you off. Also please keep in mind that in this one the gay part of the found family is actually only a side couple. But I always look for ways to recommend Marchetta, so! Anyway, this is a fantasy series with the best crafted characters you will ever meet, so even if normally fantasy isn’t your thing – please give it a try! I also have a review of the first volume up! BTW for those of you who have already read the series… do you see what I did there? :>

Young Avengers, Vol. 1: Style > Substance by Kieron Gillen (Writer)

You possibly know this comic book already, but it’s so good, one can never talk about it enough! Basically, we get what the title promises – avengers who are teens. So already better than the adult ones. And as for the rep, we have a mlm relationship, two canon bi characters & a lesbian.

American Hippo (River of Teeth #1-2) by Sarah Gailey
(buy it on BookDepo)

A bunch of ragtags who live in an alternative historical United States where the Hippo Bill passed & instead of horses the cowboys ride hippos. Our beautiful family pulls of a heist in the middle of becoming said family. And basically none of them are cishet! There’s a pan/bi male mc, bi female mc, non-binary mc & aro/ace mc. Gay shit and heists! Do you really need to know more!

I’m not gonna ask if you like this trope, too, because I’m just assuming you do.

But what other books would you recommend?

And have you read any of the ones I listed?

Let’s chat!

  1. This trope is amazing and I’m so happy to add books that include it on my TBR. I’ve been curious about K. Ancrum’s books for a while now, I think I should just start reading The Wicker King right now. I just have such high expectations, I hope I won’t be disappointed.
Also, I have only read Saving Francesca by Marchetta and I feel so ashamed that I haven’t read anything by her since 2013 or something, do you think it would be a good idea to continue with Lumatere Chronicles?

P.S.: your blog looks lovely, it’s so fresh, omg, I’m in love with its look *heart eyes*
